#DOXLON October 2017

We had another cracker of an evening at October's DOXLON; we had some real thought provoking talks (and questions!) from Rob Elkin, Matthew Macdonald-Wallace, and Connon McRae. Missed out, or just want to relive it all? Below you can find all the info about each talk and the video from the event itself.

Fancy being a part of #DOXLON? We're always excited to hear from contributors, just ping us over a message; let's chat!

Talk 1: Rob Elkin, busuu

Rob is the CTO of busuu, the worlds largest social network for language learning, where he leads teams to bring language learning to the world. As well as helping everyone to learn a new language, he is also a founder of AltConf, the Apple Developer community’s biggest independent conference.

Big Data, Terraform, Serverless, Kinesis, Snowplow, Lamdba, Real time. Lots of buzzy terms, and adding them in to any one project can be a daunting task. So when we decided that we wanted to rearchitect our data processing and events systems to have a single pipeline, we decided to try and use some of the newer tools available to really understand if they would help us deliver faster, or hinder us. We built a brand new, real time data pipeline that deals with all the user events and tracking information on our platform, in real time with minimal latency, to enable our business teams to understand user behaviour and for our data science models to help predict in real time. In this talk, I'll cover why we wanted to take on such a challenge, how we achieved it, and what it's like to run 16k events per minute through a (mostly) serverless architecture.

Talk 2: Matthew Macdonald-Wallace - "DevOps? Oh yeah we do that too..."

Matthew Macdonald-Wallace (@proffalken on Twitter) has been around a while, possibly a bit too long. He remembers when "immutable infrastructure" meant Norton Ghost, and network issues were usually caused by someone kicking a cable in the datacentre.

Join Matthew as he rants about why DevOps is about more than tools, the death of the sysadmin, the rise of the programmer, and why he started his own consultancy in a world where the true meaning of DevOps has all but been eroded by marketing and sales teams.

Talk 3: Connon MacRae, Ticketmaster

Connon MacRae talking all things Ticketmaster, their journey through DevOps and what they're doing next to prepare their organisation , and technology, for the future.

DOXLON is a monthly meetup in London organised by us at LinuxRecruit, and Outlyer, to exchange some of the latest ideas and technologies for running online services through two or three short presentations by invited speakers, and a chance to chat it after over drinks and pizza with like-minded people.

We started this event as we believe DevOps practices and ideas are the future of technology, and we have seen an insatiable demand for more knowledge about it from teams running online/cloud services in London. We now run it monthly and have become London's largest DevOps Meetup attracting a diverse and curious crowd.

For more information, please have a look at the DOXLON Meetup page.

Hope to see you at the next one!
