Scala Central #18
13/06/2018
It was great to return to the Babylon Health offices for our 18th Scala Central. The sun was shining and we were all greeted with beers and sandwiches, a pretty good start!
This time we followed a different format of six lightning talks instead of the usual three longer talks. Overall this format had a great response and allowed us to cover more topics than usual while still starting some great conversation.
Firstly we had a quick intro from Babylon Health on their impressive AI set up with a quick demo, this also followed on from talks from four of the Babylon Engineers, Greg, Jonathan, Hugh and Jacob, all with a range of topics.
You can find the videos below. Unfortunately there was an issue with Greg and Jonathan’s videos, however, we have included the audio and have shared the slides, so should still be useful.
Greg Mckay - You already know Category Theory
Jonathan Moore - Collecting cross-thread stack traces
Jacob Taylor Hindle - Load Testing with Gatling
Hugh Simpson - Kamon, Jaeger! From context propagation to tracing
David Virgil - Akka Streams vs Spark Streams
Richard Ashworth - Functional Design Patterns with Scala
Overall we had a really good event with a few drinks in the sunshine afterwards too!
We hope you enjoy the videos. We will look to continue the theme of lightning talks so if you like the idea of contributing with a shorter talk then please let me know.
Thanks again to all the speakers and to Babylon for being fantastic hosts once again! Our next meetup will take place in July (date TBC) at the Shazam offices.
We look forward to seeing you next month. As always, any tips or feedback on what you like about the meetups or anything we can improve are really welcomed.
See you then,
Alice
